A few days ago I started feeling some chest pain and the pain worsened with breathing. After 2 days of constant pain I decided to go to the doctor. It didn't take long for the doctor to figure out that I had Costochondritis.
But, I was surprised that my exam didn't end with the diagnosis. My doctor had me take an EKG. An EKG in an Electrocardiogram or a test that measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat. With each beat, an electrical impulse (or “wave”) travels through the heart. This wave causes the muscle to squeeze and pump blood from the heart. I had to do an EKG because my heart was beating at 160 BPM. That is extremely fast.
The EKG turned out fairly normally, but I had to get some blood tests done to determine the causing factors in my high pulse rate. Those test results should be in tomorrow. Anyway, my chest should be feeling better in two weeks. And until then breathing and living is going to be difficult.
And in case you are wondering, Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It causes sharp pain in the costosternal joint — where your ribs and breastbone are joined by rubbery cartilage. Pain caused by Costochondritis may mimic that of a heart attack or other heart conditions.
Most cases of Costochondritis have no apparent cause, and most go away on their own. This makes it difficult to treat. When there's no obvious cause, treatment is aimed at easing your pain while you wait for Costochondritis to resolve on its own.
Costochondritis causes pain and tenderness in the places where your ribs attach to your breastbone (costosternal joints). Often the pain is sharp, though it can also feel like a dull, gnawing pain. Pain associated with costochondritis occurs most often on the left side of your breastbone, though it can occur on either side of your chest.Other signs and symptoms of Costochondritis may include:
- Pain when taking deep breaths
- Pain when coughing
- Difficulty breathing

I do! That sounds like a pretty miserable condition - does it go away permanently (like a cold) or is it something you will always have to watch? I have asthma, so I can sympathize with the difficulty. Hope you feel (and breathe) better very soon!
Ouch! Hopefully this isn't a recurring illness. If it goes away for good, you can deal with it.
